Civil Disobedience, Saturday morning

KoA, KAWAN and Seattle activists participated, 15 people were arrested. All the South Koreans were released without bail. Organized labor plans a protest at Westlake Center at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. We recall the AFL-CIO's anti-WTO march of 1999, which was peaceful and law-abiding, and expect the same.
Though labor should be heard, we believe it is generally mistaken about these agreements. Freer trade begets efficiency — and efficiency benefits most of labor most of the time.

The Struggle Continues!
In Seattle, Washington September 6 – September 9, 2006 The 3rd round of FTA talks between South Korea and the U.S. takes place in Seattle. Free trade policies such as the proposed KorUS FTA have had devastating effects on the lives of Americans as well as workers in the partner countries. Though FTAs are widely touted for encouraging foreign direct investment, creating jobs and jump-starting economies, most of these investments are in mergers and acquisitions, resulting in job losses. NAFTA sent formerly high paying manufacturing jobs to Mexico, forced Mexican subsistence farmers to the cities, and drove wages down, leading many to risk their lives immigrating to the U.S. South Koreans fear a similar fate for their farmers, as well as the worsening of working conditions. The upcoming FTA negotiations address some 17 trade categories; the pri-mary issues for Koreans are agriculture (especially rice and beef), automobiles, pharmaceuticals and the media.

* Sam-bo Il-bae literally means "three steps, one bow." Originally born from the Buddhist tradition, it is a uniquely Korean form of protest with a long history in our resistance movements. Participants will do the entire march by taking three steps, then a full bow on our knees, touching the ground. In the process, we demonstrate and renew our deep commitment to the struggle. Sam-bo Il-bae is silent, slow, physically demanding, and extremely powerful. KoA and KAWAN invite all local allies to join us in Sam-bo Il-bae, as we renew our commitment together.

Join peasant, labor and community leaders from South Korea to protest the trade talks and neoliberal globalization.
The struggle againt the U.S.-S.K. FTA is a key struggle in the global struggle against neoliberalism
U.S.-based organizations from a wide range of sectors have endorsed and will be sending delegates to D.C.
According to former U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman,
“An FTA with South Korea would be the largest for the United States since NAFTA with Canada and Mexico.”
The U.S.-South Korea FTA, if ratified, will have devastating results. It will –
Allow the U.S. to dump cheap imports on the Korean people. Unable to compete, 3.5 million peasants stand to lose their livelihoods.
Get rid of worker protections. Practically overnight 15 million workers will become a dispensable and highly exploitable contingent labor force.
Create more migrant workers, forced to leave their homes and face discrimination in other countries.
Destroy the cultural fabric of South Korea by controlling culture through the market in which potential for profit overtakes the value of human relationships and artistic expression.
